The moon has different ‘phases’. While we always see the same ‘side’ of the Moon from Earth, its position in relation to the sun means we see different amounts of that surface. Lunar phases happen in a regular cycle. Try starting out photographing a full Moon. While this is the brightest and biggest phase, if you want to capture the textures craters and detail on the moon’s surface, it’s better to photograph the moon when it’s not full. Moonscapes will pop on an ink-black background and look almost 3D when printed on custom made acrylic frames.
ZOOM AND SHOOT
The best details of the moon are accentuated beautifully by shadows and contrast light and dark near the Moons edge. In a full moon, there is no contrast at the edges, and therefore that luminous 3D look and round detail of the surface is somewhat lost. Just like in portrait photography, you need shadows and gradient light to reveal shape and texture. The best phase to take photos is during a gibbous Moon or when the moon is more than half illuminated as you will see shadows and a gradient edge. Use your longest lens 200mm 300mm, 400mm or longer if you have it. Zoom in using a tripod and cable release to stop the wobbles. Shoot in raw to benefit in pulling out more detail in post editing. For crystal clear, precise detail, print custom made acrylic frames.
